Of football and crisps

Wading through The Times of Saturday 23rd April 2022 I read under the birthdays’ column the “On this day” and nearly fell off my chair.

“In 1927 the BBC’s first radio broadcast of an FA Cup Final came live from Wembley stadium. Cardiff City beat Arsenal 1-0”.

When writing my first novel (Eugene), I researched the history of crisp manufacture in the UK. As an American snack import (chips over there), the big boost came after this unexpected win by the Welsh team. It was reported that they had trained on eating crisps “a wonderful nutritious food”. The market took off and Eugene’s brother Frank made his fortune. Later he replaced the little blue bag of salt with flavoured crisps – another American import.
